Iwouldliketostartoutthiseditorialbyreviewingforthereadermyviewofwhatguidelinesare.IlikethedefinitionputforthbytheInstituteofMedicine(IOM).Theydefineguidelinesas“systematicallydevelopedstatementstoassistpractitionerandpatientdecisionsaboutappropriatehealthcareforaspecificclinicalcircumstance”.Ithinktheoperativewordsinthisstatementisto“assistthepractitionerandpatient”.ThereforeguidelinesaretheretoaidwithclinicaldecisionmakingandasfarasIknowarenotmandatoryorenforced.
