摘要
ThestatusoftheEuropeanX-rayFree-ElectronLaser(EuropeanXFEL),underconstructionnearHamburg,Germany,isdescribed.ThestartofoperationsoftheLCLSatSLACandofSACLAinJapanhasalreadyproducedimpressivescientificresults.TheEuropeanXFELfacilityispoweredbya17.5GeVsuperconductinglinearacceleratorthat,comparedtothesetwooperatingfacilities,willgeneratetwoordersofmagnitudemorepulsespersecond,upto27000.Itcanthereforesupportmodesofoperationswitchingthebeamupto30timespersecondamongthreedifferentexperiments,providingeachofthemwiththousandsofpulsespersecond.Thescientificpossibilitiesopenedupbythesecapabilitiesarebrieflydescribed,togetherwiththecurrentinstrumentaldevelopments(inoptics,detectors,lasers,etc.)thatarenecessarytoimplementthisprogram.
