ThePianoLessonmainlyfocusesontheconflictcausedbytwooppositeattitudestowardstheheirloom-piano.ThesisterBernieceisdeterminedtokeepthepianoandguardit,forsheconsidersitasthe"sacredicon"ofthesacrificialhistoryofherfamily.WhilethebrotherBoyWillietrieseverywaytosellit,desiringtomakeafortunebybuyingafarmandworkonit.Bothattitudeshavetheirlimitationsrespectively,whichforcesthesiblingstoturntothetraditionalwaytosolvetheconflict.Theythenrealizehowtousethepiano-thesymbolofhistoryandculturallegacy.Thatistokeepitanduseit.
