简介：Alow-costlight-emittingdiode（LED）issufficienttopumpaquasi-continuous-wavebidirectionalhigh-Qwhispering-galleryresonatorlasermadeofNd:YVO4.ThisisremarkablebecauseoftheverylimitedspatialandspectralcoherenceofanLED.TheLED,deliveringupto3.5W,centeredaround810nm,isturnedoninintervalsof100μsduration,andfortheseperiodsalaseroutputexceeding0.8mWhasbeenverified.Furthermore,0.1-s-longlaserpulsesaredemonstrated.Tothebestofourknowledge,thisisthefirstdemonstrationofanLED-pumpedhigh-Qwhispering-gallerylaser.Theconceptcanbeextendedeasilytootherlaseractivematerials.AprospectisalsotopumpseveralofsuchlaserswithasingleLED.
