简介:WesimulateGPShorizontalvelocityfieldintermsofrotationsofcrustalblockstodescribedeformationbehavioroftheChinesemainlandanditsneighboringareas.31crustalblocksareboundedprimarilyby~30Quaternaryfaultswithdistinctgeometriesandvariablelong-termratesof<20mm/a,and1683GPSvelocitiesweredeterminedfromdecade-longobservationsmostlywithanaverageduncertaintyof1?2mm/a.WedefineGPSvelocityatasitebythecombinationofmotionofrigidblockandelasticstraininducedbythefaultthatislockingduringaseismiccycle.ModelvelocitiespredictedfromthepreferableblockmodelmatchwellwiththeGPSvelocitiestoanuncertaintyof~1.7mm/a.Theslipratesinferredfromthismodelisinarangeof6?18mm/aforthemajorfaultsinTibetanditsmarginsand1?4mm/aineasternChina,consistentwithgeologicalobservations.Ournumericalsimulationsuggeststhatthecrustalblocksdeforminternallyatalevelof~10×10-9/a,quitesmallincomparisonwithsignificantdeformationlocalizedalongfaultzonesof50?100kmwide.Weconcludethatthepatternofcontinentaldeformationisnotcontinuous-likebutblock-like,andthetenetofplatetectonicsmaybeapplicabletocharacterizetheactivedeformationinAsia.
简介:Basedonthestrongearthquakecatalogue,thispaperdiscussesthecharacteristicsofthetimeseriesofstrongearthquakeactivitiesintheworld,westernChinesemainlandanditsperipheral"bigtriangleseismicregion",aswellastheChinesemainland.AccordingtotheanalysisoftheperiodicfeaturesofglobalseismicityofM≥8.0strongevents,itisfoundthatthereissignificantdifferenceinglobalseismicitybeforeandafterthe1960s.StatisticalanalysiswiththeFishermethodhasrevealedthatthe"bigtriangularseismicregion"hasexperiencedaprocessofM8.0earthquakeactivitywithadurationofoverahundredyearssince1800.Furtheranalysisshowsthattheglobalseismicityandthe"bigtriangularseismicregion"possiblyhasaperiodofahundred-yearscale,andhasquasisynchronicitytoacertainextent.TheshallowearthquakeactivityofMS≥7.0intheChinesemainlandisobviouslycontrolledbytheseismicityinthebigtriangularseismicregionandbyglobalseismicityinalargerspatial-scale.Intermsofthetimeseriesoftheseearthquakes,theseismicityshowsadecadalandcentury-scaleactivitypatterns.

简介:Waveletsareausefultoolforanalyzingthetime-frequencyofanon-stableseriesandarewidelyappliedinmanyfields.Theprocessofearthquakepreparationandoccurrenceisanon-linearprocess.Inthepaper,thewaveletmethodisusedtoanalyzetheseriesofearthquakedataforthetimeperiodfrom1900to2003inthewestoftheChinesemainlandanditsadjacentarea(WCMAA),andtoobtainthecharacteristicinformationfordifferenttimescales.Inthepast103years,therewerefourprimaryperiodsofregionalearthquakeactivityintheareawithdurationsof42,22,7and14years,respectivelyandtheintensityofearthquakeactivitychangingwithtime.Itdoesn'tmakesensetotalkaboutactiveorquietperiodsofearthquakeactivityunlessitisbasedonaspecifictimescale.Inaddition,thetendencyanalysisofearthquakeactivityusingtheprimaryperiodofseismicactivityandwaveletcoefficientsofvariedtimescalesindicatesthattheearthquakeactivityinthisregionwillbehighintheforthcomingyears.
