  • 简介:AbstractObjective:Nasal vestibular furunculosis (NVF) is characterized by an acute localized infection of the hair follicle in the skin lining of the nasal vestibule. This study provides an up-to-date narrative analysis on NVF, its presentation, complications and management.Methods:A literature search was conducted electronically with no time constraints using "Nasal Vestibular Furuncolosis" or "NVF" through Medline, Cochrane Library and Web of Science, including MeSH terms with no language restrictions. Included were: Studies that described NVF's presentation and subsequent management and excluded were: Irrelevant studies that did not provide details about NVF's presentation or management, furthermore studies that alluded to Nasal vestibulitis without furunculosis were excluded. There were no limitations on time, up until the review was commenced in May 2020.Results:Seven articles complied with the inclusion criteria. All papers reviewed were from 2015 to 2020. Three out of 4 studies reported duration of symptomatic NVF between 3 and 4 days. The most common presentation of NVF was reported as erythema, swelling, tender over the nasal tip. The most frequent, successful management of NVF frequently included intranasal topical mupirocin and in some cases oral sodium fusidate. NVF was reported to clear within 7 days by 2 studies. There were no randomised studies exploring NVF or NVF management.Conclusion:Although a very common condition, much research is required to allude to the pathophysiology and management of NVF. Future studies should explore the reasons as to the resistance of topical antibiotics in some patients, the differing strains of staphylococcus aureus and their resulting complications, the reasons behind the familiar connection and the most effective management plan for NVF.

  • 简介:AbstractSeptoplasty is widely used in the treatment of structural nasal obstructions, and it also has a good effect and a high degree of postoperative satisfaction. However, there a large number of structures demonstrate abnormalities related to structural nasal obstruction, including the external nose, maxilla, nasal cavity and paranasal sinus. Nasal septum deviation is only one signs of structural nasal obstruction and does not represent all possible structural abnormalities of the nasal cavity and its surrounding structure. Septoplasty is only performed to correct deviations of the nasal septum, which in many cases is obviously insufficient in restoring the symmetry of the nasal structure. Therefore, septoplasty alone is not suitable for the treatment of most structural nasal obstructions. Nasal ventilation expansion surgery, which typically covers more abnormal structural correction procedures than septoplasty, should be used when describing the treatment of structural nasal obstruction.

  • 简介:AbstractBackground and objective:Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) increases the nasal volume, and thereby it can alter the nasal resonance. The objectives were to measure the percentage of nasal resonance following FESS and compare it with healthy individuals with normal nasal findings.Methods:The nasometric analysis of voice was done using n/p/m consonant sounds in 72 individuals with healthy post FESS cavities (group 1) and 72 healthy individuals with normal nasal findings without any nasal pathology (group 2). The scores of nasal resonances were expressed in percentages and were compared between the two groups. Both in group 1 and group 2, 32 (44.4%) were females, and 40(55.6%) were males. In group 1, 51 participants had bilateral FESS cavities, and 21 had unilateral FESS cavities. Kannada was the mother tongue in 30 (41.7%) participants in group 1 and 36 (50.0%) in group 2. Malayalam was the mother tongue in 42(58.3%) participants in group 1 and 36 (50.0%) in group 2.Results:In both cases and control groups, more than 80% of the participants were showing less than 20% of nasal resonance. In group 1, the mean values of/n/p/m sounds were 11.23%, 10.23% and 11.42% respectively, and in group 2 the mean values were 8.27%, 8.58% and 8.58% respectively. But the P value was not statistically significant. Individuals with unilateral FESS cavities had more nasal resonance values compared to bilateral FESS cavities. Similarly, Kannada speaking people had more values compared to Malayam speaking individua.Conclusion:Changes in nasal resonance after FESS is minimal, and it is unnoticed. But it may affect the speech quality in professional voice users, depending on their language. Though the nasometer is considered as the most validated instrument to record nasal resonance, we feel that further standardization is needed to evaluate the nasalance.

  • 简介:WiththerapiddevelopmentofhighdamprojectswithinChina,thedragon-drop-tailspillwaytunnelisintroducedandwidelyused.Inviewofthehighwaterheadandthelargeflowvelocityonthedragon-drop-tailsection,aeratordevicesareusuallyplacedforthecavitationdamagecontrol.Forthedeviceplacedinitsinitialposition,itisaseriousconcerntodesignasuitableflowregimeofthecavityandtocontrolthecavityfillingwaterduetothelargeflowdepthandthelowFroudenumberthroughthisaerator.Inthisstudy,therelationshipsbetweenthegeometriesoftheaeratordeviceandthejetimpactangleofthelowertrajectoryoftheflowaretheoreticallyanalyzedwith/withoutalocalslope.Ninetestcaseswithdifferentgeometriesaredesigned,theeffectivenessofthefillingwatercontrolisexperimentallyinvestigatedunderdifferentoperationconditions,andtwocriteriaofthelocalslopedesignareproposed.Itisconcludedthatthecavityflowregimeandthefillingwatercanbeimprovedifasmallimpactangleandsomesuitablegeometriesofthelocalslopearedesigned.
