Globalpositioningsystem(GPS)forvehicleapplicationsintheurbanareaischallengedbylowsignalintensity.ThecarrierloopbasedonfastFouriertransform(FFT)canobtainahighsignaltonoiseratio(SNR)gainbyincreasingtheobservationtime.However,thisleadstoamajorproblemthattheaccelerationcannotbeignored.TheperformanceoftheFFT-basedloopwilldeclinewiththeaccelerationincreasing.ThispaperdiscussestheeffectofthedynamiconFFTfirst.ThenahighperformancecarriertrackingloopforweakGPSL5signalsisproposed.Itcombinesdiscretechirp-Fouriertransform(DCFT)andthephasefittingmethodtoestimateDopplerfrequencyandDopplerratesimultaneously.First,asequenceofintegrationresultsisusedtoperformDCFTtoestimatecoarseDopplerfrequencyandDopplerrate.Second,thephaseofthesequenceiscalculatedandusedtoperformlinearfitting.Bythephasefittingmethod,thefineDopplerfrequencyandDopplerratecanbeestimated.ThecomputationcostissmallbecausetheintegrationresultsareusedandthephasefittingmethodneedsonlycoarseestimatesofDopplerfrequencyandDopplerrate.ComparedwithFFTandDCFT,theprecisionofthephasefittingmethodisnotlimitedbytheresolution.Thustheproposedloopcangethighprecisionandlowcarriertonoiseratio(C/N0)trackingthreshold.Simulationresultsshowthisloophasagreatimprovementthanconventionalloopsforurbanweak-signalapplications.
