Thegravityp-medianmodelisanimportantimprovementtothewidely-usedp-medianmodel.However,thereisstilladebateonitsvalidityinempiricalapplications.Previousstudiesevendoubtthesignificanceofthegravityp-medianmodel.UsingacasestudyoftertiaryhospitalsinShenzhen,China,thisstudyre-examinesthedifferencebetweenthegravityp-medianmodelwiththep-medianmodel,bydecomposingthedifferencebetweenthetwomodelsintogravityruleandvariantattraction.Thisstudyalsoproposesamodifiedgravityp-medianmodelbyincorporatingadistancethreshold.Theempiricalresultssupportthevalidityofthegravityp-medianmodel,andalsorevealthatonlywhentheattractionsofcandidatefacilitylocationsarevariablewillthegravityp-medianmodelleadtodifferentresultswiththep-medianmodel.Thedifferencebetweenthemodifiedgravityp-medianmodelandthegravityp-medianmodelisalsoexamined.Moreover,theimpactsofthedistance-decayparameteranddistancethresholdonsolutionsareinvestigated.Resultsindicatethatalargerdistance-decayparametertendstoresultinamoredisperseddistributionofoptimalfacilitiesandasmalleraveragetraveltime,andasmallerdistancethresholdcanbetterpromotethespatialequityoffacilities.Theproposedmethodcanalsobeappliedinstudiesofothertypesoffacilitiesorinotherareas.
